Autodesk Maya 2011 Service Pack 1

Autodesk has released a Service Pack for Maya 2011. Download it from the Autodesk website.

Please refer to the readme file for the complete list of issues addressed in this SP.

Remember each  release is cumulative; it contains the fixes from the Hotfix(es) that preceded it.

Note: You will also need to update your installation of mental ray Satellite and mental ray Standalone to benefit from some of the fixes in this release.

If you have already installed the Maya 2011 Subscription Advantage Pack, you do not need to install Maya 2011 Service Pack 1, since it is already part of the Subscription Advantage Pack.

Turtle

I haven't posted in a while, and I thought it was about time I did. I just got back from a brief stay in Warsaw, Poland and I'm currently working my way through the Turtle tutorials (you may have read about Autodesk's acquisition of Illuminate Labs ? ). I could tell you about Warsaw (great city) but news about Turtle is probably more appropriate....

Qt patch for Autodesk Maya 2011 Linux tablet users

If you are using Maya 2011 on Linux and a Wacom tablet, you may encounter refresh problems in Maya.

To workaround this problem, download the updated library (libQtGui.so.4.5.3) and replace the library that is currently on your system. Root permission on the system is required. This library works with any Maya 2011 release.

Note: For back-up purposes, you should save a copy of the library that exists on your system to another location before replacing it. The default location of the library is: /usr/autodesk/maya2011-x64/lib.

Maya 2011 on Linux and the Hotbox

If you have installed Maya 2011 Hotfix 3 and see errors in the terminal or a black Hotbox in the viewport, we advise you to disable the CIOverlays option in your xorg.conf file, located in /etc/X11/xorg.com.

With the move to Qt in 2011 we no longer have a need for colour indexing.  Instead, as of Hotfix 3 we have introduced RGB overlays and this option should be used instead.

• Open your xorg.conf file
• Remove following line:
  Option      "CIOverlay" "ON"
• Add following line:
  Option      "Overlay" "ON"

The caveat here is that you cannot set both CIOverlay and Overlay at the same time, and users of Maya 2010 will be aware of the instabilities that can arise when working without CIOverlay.

So what do you do if you use both Maya 2010 and Maya 2011 on a daily basis ?

Maya 2011 on Xeon systems

If you are using Maya 2011 on Xeon system and are faced with speed issues, you might want to disable the Parallel memory variable by doing the following.

Set this environment variable MAYA_NO_PARALLEL_MEMCPY to 1
This will disable the parallel memory copy.
In some cases, parallel memory copy is faster on Opteron and Nehalem based systems.
Note Another factor that may impact speed is the workload running in Maya.

Maya 2011 Hotfix 1

Autodesk releases its first Hotfix for Maya 2011. Download it from the Autodesk website.

The Hotfix addresses these limitations:

• Maya crashes when navigating through menus on Mac 64‐bit.
• Viewport renderer plugins do not work
• mental images Material no longer respects refraction limit
• mental images Material Ambient Occlusion color bleed stops Final Gather bounces

Note: please uninstall Maya 2011 before you proceed to the install of Maya 2011 Hotfix 1.
