You've succesfully installed Maya 2011 on your Windows operating system, but launching Maya fails with the following error:
"This application has failed to start because d3dx9_42.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
You may noticed during the installation that the directX Runtime Update failed, or didn't happen at all. In order to update the DirectX libraries that Maya requires, I suggest running DXSETUP.EXE
You will find this file in the DirectX folder that was extracted along with the Maya 2011 installation files.
Let's say you've downloaded and unpacked autodesk_maya_2011_sp1_win_32bit.exe on a workstation installed with Windows 32-bit XP, the default location of the file DXSETUP.exe would be:
C:/Autodesk/Maya2011_32-bit/support/DirectX
You may need to restart your workstation.

I think you'll find that this is a problem with the userPrefs file- did you copy your prefs across from a previous installation of Maya, as you are prompted to do when you first open a new install of Maya?
Anyway, please locate the /maya/2011/prefs/userPrefs.mel file and delete it (or if you're not convinced it's the culprit you could just rename it). Restart Maya, and a new userPrefs file will be created - more importantly you won't see those error messages.
