Even if the directConnect plug-in is set to Loaded in Maya's Plug-in Manager, IGES and STEP files may still fail to import into Maya.
Sometimes you get an error message, sometimes Fcheck will open. Either way, your model fails to load properly.
The reason is that the application responsible for converting the IGES/STEP file has not been installed.
To solve the issue, please ensure that DirectConnect 2.0 is installed on your computer; you can download it from the following link:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?linkID=9242259&id=15012100&siteID=123112
- Download the appropriate DirectConnect file for your operating system
- Follow the install instructions
- Restart Maya
- Check the Maya plug-in directConnect is set to Loaded
- Import your IGES/STEP file
The Maya plug in does not convert the file data, but communicates with Direct Connect 2.0 to import the data in a Maya-friendly format.

Is there an update to this - that link no longer works. I'm having this issue with importing IGS files as well.
